Home Health Care - Senior Home Safety Inspections

Making Every Home a Safer Place for Seniors.

Your own home health care begins with safety at home. Many seniors wish to age in place, making it crucial for their homes to be safe, secure, and comfortable. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines aging in place as “the ability to live in one's own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.” Sadly, many seniors lack the necessary safety and security to meet these criteria in their homes.

Senior Home Safety Inspectors are experts in identifying potential safety issues within homes. They provide comprehensive evaluations and recommend practical measures to improve the overall safety and security of the living environment.

During a senior home safety inspection, several critical areas are assessed, such as overall home safety, fall prevention, fire safety, bathroom safety, kitchen safety, and home security. Inspectors meticulously evaluate each aspect for potential risks and offer recommendations for modifications or improvements to enhance health & safety.

How It Works

A few simple steps to make your home or your family members safe.

Safety Inspected. Peace Protected.

Staying home allows older adults to maintain their routine, stay close to family and friends, and avoid the potential limitations of care facilities.

The advantages of senior home safety inspections are substantial. They help identify potential hazards, prevent accidents and injuries, and foster independence and peace of mind for seniors and their families. By addressing safety concerns proactively, seniors can continue to age in place comfortably and confidently. Some of the topics and issues we address in our Extensive 240-item safety inspection of your home include:

Falls are the most significant concern for seniors, often leading to serious injuries. A fall prevention assessment is a crucial part of the home safety inspection, examining various areas for potential hazards. Flooring surfaces must be slip-resistant and in good condition, staircases should have proper handrails, secure steps, and adequate lighting, and thresholds and room transitions need to be smooth and safe. Additionally, tripping hazards such as loose rugs or clutter should be identified and removed.

Fire safety is paramount, especially for seniors with limited mobility or decreased sensory abilities. The inspection assesses functional smoke detectors in all necessary areas, accessible and functional fire extinguishers, and potential fire hazards in electrical systems. Evaluating and suggesting safe evacuation plans are also part of the process to ensure comprehensive fire safety.

The bathroom can be particularly hazardous for seniors due to slippery surfaces and limited space. The inspection focuses on flooring slip resistance and necessary modifications, secure installation of grab bars and handrails, non-slip mats and shower chairs for shower and bathtub safety, and identifying and recommending temperature controls to prevent scalding risks.

Kitchen safety involves inspecting cooking appliances, sharp objects, and potentially hazardous materials. Ensuring appliances are in good working condition and properly installed, assessing countertops and flooring for slip resistance and ergonomic/height considerations, identifying and suggesting safe storage of materials, and preventing access to harmful substances are all important aspects of the inspection.

Ensuring the security of seniors at home is critical to their health, safety and peace of mind. Checking or installing window locks, door locks, alarm systems, and video cameras can significantly enhance their protection. These security measures collectively create a safer living environment, allowing seniors to feel more secure and maintain their independence.

By meticulously examining these key areas and dozens more, a senior home safety inspection aims to identify potential hazards and provide recommendations for creating a secure living environment. Implementing suggested safety measures can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and injuries, enabling seniors to maintain their independence and enjoy peace of mind at home.
